Welcome to South Tyneside
We've got a lot going for us. Rich cultural heritage. Spectacular scenery. Strong community spirit.
- Covers 64 sq. km with six areas – South Shields, Jarrow, Hebburn, Boldon, Whitburn and Cleadon.
- Has a population of 151,020.
- Sits within the Tyne and Wear conurbation – boundaries include the River Tyne and the North Sea.
- Most of our coastline has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
- St. Bede was once one of the Borough’s residents. Scholars from all over Europe flocked to hear the greatest scholar and teacher of the Middle Ages.
- Souter Lighthouse was the first in the world to use reliable electric current.
- Some of the most desirable private properties in the region are to be found in Cleadon and Whitburn.
- Through the 19th Century and first half of the 20th Century, South Tyneside built up world-renowned shipbuilding, coal mining and heavy engineering industries.
- South Tyneside suffered industrial decline in the 1970s and 1980s with severe social and economic consequences and in December 2001 had the worst unemployment rate in England and Wales.
- Unemployment has fallen steadily throughout 2007, and in October had reached its lowest ever position. The Borough's geography as a small number of closely connected towns means that there are unconnected areas of employment deprivation. Our challenge now is prioritising these areas.
