Musical Instrument Tutition
Instrumental tuition is provided through South Tyneside Schools. There is an annual charge of £50, though this charge is deferred for those pupils receiving free school meals.
Pupils are chosen in collaboration with the school and loaned an instrument from the authority's stock. Tuition is provided on brass, percussion, string and woodwind instruments. Some schools provide additional tuition including guitar.
When a pupil is judged to be at the appropriate standard they are encouraged to join school and authority ensembles.
The authority has an extensive range of activities to encourage the pupil's musical development:

To promote progress the music service arranges Royal Schools of Music examinations twice yearly. Specific courses are also arranged during the year.
