A new hi-tech video security system is bringing peace of mind to tenants living in a South Tyneside block of flats.

Each property in the Whiteleas flats will be equipped with a new video intercom system clearly showing who is at the main front entrance and on the landings.

The work is being carried out by South Tyneside Council in conjunction with South Tyneside Homes.

Councillor Bill Brady, Lead Member for Housing Futures, called at one of the flats to see how the new video entry works. He said: "This is an excellent system that will greatly increase the security of the premises because each tenant will be able to see at a glance who exactly is at their door. Hopefully this work will be carried out with the minimum of disruption to tenants and I am very sure they will be pleased with the added safety this system brings."

Councillor Brady, who is also a local Whiteleas councillor added: "The funding for this project was secured as a result of partnership working between myself and my fellow Whiteleas ward councillors who approached the West Shields Community Area Forum and South Tyneside Homes."

John Musson Director of Housing and Service Improvement at South Tyneside Homes said: "We take the security of all our tenants very seriously and are thrilled with the new security system. The system, which was funded by South Tyneside Homes and West Shields Community Area Forum, includes video links from the front entrance to each individual flat and will significantly increase tenants' security and safety in their homes."
