Young people at a South Tyneside club are enjoying a whole host of fun activities thanks to a cash boost from their local Community Area Forum.

The £1,000 grant from the East Shields Community Area Forum was awarded to St Mark's and St Cuthbert's Youth Club, in Cleadon Park.

The money is being used to support the young people who are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards with activities including an environmental project in the centre garden, fishing excursions and ice-skating trips.

Some of the money has also been spent on improving the youth club facilities. This has included painting their community hall's fire doors with local landmarks such as Cleadon Water Tower and Cleadon Windmill.

Councillor Alex Donaldson, Chairman of the East Shields Community Area Forum, said: "The youth leaders at St Mark's and St Cuthbert's are making great strides to encourage the young people to be more active and help them to boost their skills as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme. I'm sure they will all have lots of fun taking part in the scheme while building personal confidence and great team spirit at the same time."

Councillor Eileen Leask, Vice Chairman, added: "We are always keen to engage with our local young people and we were delighted to be able to support them with this contribution. I hope that they have a marvellous time and enjoy all the activities they have planned."

The group, which meets at St Mark's and St Cuthbert's Church in Quarry Lane, was formed in 2007 to provide young people aged 13 to 19 with educational and recreational activities.
