A South Shields estate is set to benefit from a £400,000 revamp, and residents are being given a chance to have their say on how it should take shape.

South Tyneside Homes is planning a major investment in environmental improvements on the Parkway estate in Whiteleas.

Among the planned improvements are new paths, parking bays, street signs, paving repairs as well as a statue and other artwork linked to the former Harton Colliery.

The plans have the full backing of Whitleas councillors Bill Brady, Ernest Gibson and Terry Haram.

Councillor Brady said: "This is a great scheme and this level of investment is exactly what is needed to bring the estate up to scratch. We're looking at all kinds of work, from paving repairs to new artwork that ties in with the area's history. This is in addition to the Decent Homes programme and can only be a good thing for local people. I look forward to seeing it take shape."

Councillor Gibson added: "This project will see a major investment in the estate by South Tyneside Homes. It will be carried out in conjunction with ward councillors, following consultation with residents, and will give the whole estate a visual lift making it a much more attractive place to live."

Councillor Haram said: "This exciting project is timely and complements the Decent Homes work, street lighting programme and other works recently undertaken on the estate. I am confident that when this work is completed that residents and their visitors will welcome these much-needed environmental improvements."

The plans for the estate have been drawn up by South Tyneside Council's Infrastructure Team and are on display in Boldon Lane Library, Boldon Lane. Residents have until January 15, 2010 to have their say on them.

South Tyneside Homes is proposing a series of environmental projects aimed at improving the lives of residents across the Borough. The projects will be carried out during the Decent Homes programme.

Mark Whittle, Director of Investment for South Tyneside Homes, said: "This will be the first of 12 environmental schemes that we will be carrying out using Decent Homes funding. We are confident that the works will not only have a major positive impact on the appearance of the estate but will also enhance the lives of the people living there."
