Abandoned vehicles
If you suspect that a vehicle has been abandoned on a public road or public open space the council may be able to remove it.
Asbestos
The council does not offer a collection service for asbestos. We will accept asbestos from residents if it has come from their own domestic property.
There is a skip available at Middlefields Depot and you must arrange a time to deliver the waste to us. You can do this by contacting Community Services on 0191 427 2064.
Clinical waste
We operate a separate collection service for bagged and/or boxed clinical waste. This service is free of charge for collections from domestic properties. Bags are collected weekly and sharps boxes are exchanged as requested. You must not put clinical waste in your wheeled bin or anywhere that may cause a risk to other people.
If you need this service, your District Nurse will contact the council for you.
Commercial and industrial waste
The weighbridge at the Waste Transfer Station, Middlefields Depot is available for use by commercial and industrial businesses. There is a charge for using the weighbridge. It is open on Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm and Saturday from 8am to 11.30am

- drive off the weighbridge and out of the depot
- Follow the instructions of the weighbridge operator.
Fly-tipping
Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of household and trade waste in lay-bys and down quiet country lanes.
Fly-tipping is more hazardous than littering and is therefore a criminal offence under waste legislation. On conviction, the fine is up to £20,000 or six month's imprisonment or both.
If you see someone committing a fly-tipping offence or need to notify us of a fly-tipping, contact the Customer Contact Centre on 0191 427 7000 or report it using the e-services form below.
Hazardous waste
The council does not offer a collection service for hazardous waste.
- Paints - emulsion, gloss etc.
- Car batteries
- Solvents eg. glue, white spirit
- Chemicals
- Asbestos
- Oils eg. engine oil, cooking oil, fuel oil
- Prescription medicines
We will accept small quantities of hazardous waste from residents if it has come from their own domestic property. The hazardous waste storage container is located at Middlefields Depot and you need to arrange a time to deliver the waste to us. You can do this by contacting Community Services on (0191) 427 2064 or (0191) 427 2066. You can have access to the storage container during the following hours:
Monday to Friday 8.00am to 4.00pm Saturday 8.00am to 11.30am
It is important that you take great care when handling or transporting potentially dangerous materials. If there is advice on handling the materials on the containers then you should follow this advice. Please make sure that all containers are sealed securely to prevent any spillage while they are being transported.
Litter
The council's Blitz-it team removes litter, graffiti and waste in South Tyneside. They look after green spaces as well as streets.
Equipped with the latest technology, the Blitz-It operators can respond rapidly to all cleansing problems.
All Blitz-It operators are dressed in easy to spot purple and yellow uniforms that match their new equipment.
Don't live with it, report it. Report litter to council's contact centre hotline 0191 427 7000, text the council on: 07786 200802, or use our online form.
The council will prosecute litter dropping (£50 fine).
Junk mail
Well now you can do something about it and help the environment at the same time.
The Mailing Preference Service (MPS) is a free service which enables consumers to have their names removed from lists used by the advertising industry.
To found out more details about the scheme or to register free, please visit: www.mpsonline.org.uk
In South Tyneside alone, we estimate that we have to deal with over 2,000 tonnes of this type of waste each year.
You will benefit by not having to sift through the rubbish that comes through your letterbox and spend more time dealing with important things, like recycling!
