How does it work?
"It's official - South Tyneside is one of the cleanest boroughs in the country and it is thanks, in part, to the way we use hi-tech methods of communication.
There are a few reasons behind our success:
Firstly, local people are vigilant and are quick to ring our customer contact centre hotline (0191 427 7000) to report fly tipping, litter, fly-posting and graffiti. Keep the calls coming because they are vital to keeping South Tyneside clean and tidy!
Secondly, our Blitz-It teams are passionate about sparkling streets. They take a real pride in their work and love it when everything is spick and span.
And thirdly, we harness the power of new technologies to speed up our response times.
Our Blitz-It and graffiti team leaders all have handheld Blackberry computers so the contact centre, and colleagues, can send them details of where examples of environmental vandalism have been spotted.
They definitely make the service more efficient. I can get a report in and if I'm in the area, I go round straight away. People are sometimes really surprised to see me turn up so quickly!"
