Watch Out Career Opportunity Scams
Press release
People are urged to think twice before parting with their cash for training and study manuals that claim to help them start a new career.
South Tyneside Council's Trading Standards team are reminding people to check the small print on all adverts and emails that promise new job opportunities.
Councillor Joanne Bell, Lead Member for Innovation and Safer and Stronger Communities said: "We're urging anyone interested in these ads to research the company before going ahead and parting with any money. We have found that some of these ads are placed by unscrupulous fraudsters who are using increasingly sophisticated methods to con people.
"Often people have to pay an upfront fee for training, study aids or materials and sadly many people find that they receive very little in return for their processing fee The Office of Fair Trading has estimated that these scams cost the UK public £30 million a year."
She added: "If you're not sure about the companies please seek advice from Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or call Trading Standards on 424 6998
