Go Green In The Garden This Summer

Press release

Garden waste collections of green bins start again from April for South Tyneside residents.

As spring starts it's a great time to get your garden ready for summer by having a clear up.

If you already have a green bin, look out for the calendar coming through your door or go to the website to find out when your collections start again www.southtyneside.info/wasteandrecycling . They are fortnightly on the same day as your refuse is collected.

Remember - just put garden waste such as grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, leaves, weeds and twigs in your green bin. Please do not put items like food waste, stones, plant pots or plastic bags as we can't compost these.

If you're a keen gardener have you also thought of composting your food waste and other material at home? It's a cost effective and natural process that transforms kitchen and garden waste into a nutrient rich soil improver.

A home composter allows anything from fruit and vegetable peelings to egg shells, tea bags and pet hair, or even shredded paper to be composted.

As well as reducing the amount of waste you throw away and recycling it into something useful. Composting at home not only helps in the battle against climate change by reducing levels of CO2, one of the main greenhouse gasses, but also is a great way to reduce what gets land-filled from your refuse bin.

South Tyneside residents can get more information and order a compost bin from www.stc.getcomposting.com . The price of the compost bins from 1 April start at £15 + delivery. You can also ring the order hotline 0845 130 6090.

Councillor Jim Perry, lead member for Environment and Transport said, "This is the time of year many of us enjoy getting back into our gardens. We can all do our bit not just to keep our gardens green but also our communities and wider world by being more sustainable in our lives and environmentally friendly. Using the Green bins for garden waste and also using home composting are easy ways to help reduce the amount that goes to landfill and the damage done to the environment. Home composting will also of course save you money, which is an added incentive!"
