Pride logo 2011X Factor champ Joe McElderry took time out of his busy schedule to return to the Pride of South Tyneside Awards on Sunday 22 April.

The 20-year-old, from Westoe, who is currently working on his fourth album, won the Young Performer of the Year award in 2008, before going on to win the ITV1 talent show.

Joe presented the Child of Courage award, then treated audience members to two songs to close the night.

The awards were organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House.

Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Jim Sewell, said: "The Pride of South Tyneside awards recognise the real heroes in our communities and the remarkable things they do.

"With the support of the Shields Gazette, we can celebrate their achievements, acknowledge the fantastic contribution they make to South Tyneside and inspire others to follow in their footsteps."

Previous winners include 2009 X-Factor champion Joe McElderry and Jade Thirlwall, who came out on top in the national talent show with the girl group Little Mix. They were our Young Performer of the Year in 2008 and 2010 respectively.
