South Shields Market In Committee Spotlight

Press release

Ways to boost activity in South Shields Market Place is just one of the issues up for discussion when a Council committee meets on Tuesday (6th September).

South Shields is home to one of the region's oldest markets, having been established since the 1700s around the Eighteenth century old town hall. The market is held three times a week - Monday, Friday and Saturday.

Members of the Select Committee Jobs and Enterprise, Regeneration and Resources, Culture and Wellbeing, will receive an update on Market performance and operations at their meeting on Tuesday. They will also be looking at a range of opportunities to help increase activity and bring more visitors to the Market Place.

Committee Chairman, Councillor Rob Dix said: "We are very proud to have a traditional market in our Borough. It's of immense historical value to us and we recognise the contribution it makes to the town.

"There's no doubt that the difficult economic climate, combined with changes in shopping trends and the rise of internet shopping and retail parks, is putting real pressure on market traders across the country. One of the key challenges is to make the market more attractive to both traders and shoppers.

"We will be considering ways to help boost trade while also looking at how the Market Place can be used more effectively to bring more people to the town, such as promoting the space as an event location when and where the market is not operating.

"As a Select Committee, we can help to influence future work programmes and bring about improvements that meet the needs of both local traders and the wider community."

Members of the press and public are welcome to attend the next meeting of the Select Committee Jobs and Enterprise, Regeneration and Resources, Culture and Wellbeing, which takes place on Tuesday 6th September, at 10am, in South Shields Town Hall.
