Hearing and visual impairments
The Sensory Service for Children & Families provides help for children who have problems with their hearing (Hearing Impairment or HI) and / or sight (Visual Impairment or VI). Our specialist staff work with children in school using special techniques and sometimes special equipment. We work with staff and pupils in schools to spread awareness of hearing and visual impairments, explain what the conditions can mean and show how pupils with HI or VI can participate normally in school life and in the wider community.
Referral is usually via medical professionals such as the GP or school nurse. Schools can also approach the Service directly for advice. Caring for a child with a HI or VI can be daunting, so we also provide advice and guidance for parents / carers and their families.
