Finding Out What Borough's Libraries Have To Offer
Press release
Cleadon Park councillors Jim Foreman (centre) and Alex Donaldson show off Cleadon Park Library’s impressive range of books to Robert Laws during an open day for people with learning disabilities.
A group of adults with learning disabilities have been finding out about what South Tyneside's libraries have to offer.
The group attended an open day held at Cleadon Park Library in South Shields, where they met staff before being shown around the impressive facilities.
The event was organised by South Tyneside Council's Library Service in partnership with Talk 2 Us, a support group for people with learning disabilities.
Joining the group on the day were Cleadon Park ward councillors Jim Foreman and Alex Donaldson.
Councillor Foreman, who is also the Council's Lead Member for Children, Young People and Families, said: "Our libraries provide a pleasant, welcoming and friendly place for local people to meet and learn and it is important that they are accessible to all. As well as showing the group all the brilliant things our libraries have to offer, this was also an opportunity for people with learning disabilities to tell us how we can make the library service better.
"Everyone who attended the event was given a library ticket so we hope to see them back in one of our libraries very soon! I'd also like to give a huge 'thank you' to the staff at the library for their work with the group."
Councillor Donaldson added: "It was a pleasure to meet these residents and I'd like to thank everybody who was involved in the organisation of the event. Cleadon Park Library is the newest in South Tyneside and it is already proving to be very popular with people in Cleadon Park and beyond. It is a fantastic facility and we want to make sure it meets the needs of everyone in our communities.
"As the library occupies just one part of the Cleadon Park Primary Care Centre, we also took the chance to show the group around the other community facilities on offer."
Funding for the open day was provided by the Advocacy Sparks project, which promotes inclusion for people with learning disabilities.
