Strategic Flood Risk Assessment

We have undertaken a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA) in response to Planning Policy Statement 25 (PPS25): Development and Flood Risk. This requires Local Planning Authorities to assess the risk of flooding in their areas. The aim is to avoid inappropriate development in high flood-risk areas, directing it to lower risk areas instead.

A revised Level 1 and a Level 2 SFRA was completed by consultants in February 2011. The SFRA assesses the risk of flooding from all sources, including; fluvial (river), tidal, surface water, sewers, groundwater and reservoirs. It also includes mapping of Flood Zones 1, 2, 3a and 3b (Flood Zone 3b defines the functional flood plain and also takes into account existing flood defences).

The SFRA provides background information for our Local Development Framework and will help to influence and shape planning decisions, whilst assisting with emergency planning, shoreline management and drainage responsibilities.

Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment

We completed a Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment (PFRA) in June 2011 in fulfillment of our statutory duty under Section 10 of the Flood Risk Regulations (2009). The PFRA is a high level summary of risk, describing the probability of future flooding and the consequences of past flooding. It identifies areas where the risks are significant and warrant further examination through the production of maps and management plans.
