Changes to your bin collections

To improve value for money on our bin collection service, we will now be operating a 4 day working week from Tuesday to Friday.

This means our bin routes will be changed to make them more efficient and your bin collection day could change as a result.

Why are we doing this?

Despite continued increase in the number of properties in South Tyneside over the past few years, our bin collection rounds have stayed the same. This means that the routes our refuse vehicles take when collecting your bins aren't necessarily the most efficient.

After carefully analysing our routes, we found that we can improve value for money by operating a shorter working week, without reducing the level of service to you.

How will the changes affect me?

As the number of days our bin rounds operate on has changed, your collection day is likely to change also. Bin collections will only take place between Tuesday - Friday and we will no longer be collecting bins on a Monday.

To find out your new collection day, please use our bin collection day search tool on the right of this page.

Weekly and fortnightly collections

The frequency of your bin collections will stay the same, so your grey bin will still be emptied weekly and your blue bin will be emptied fortnightly, as they were before.

Garden waste collections

Garden waste and green bin collections won't be affected by these changes.

Assisted pull-outs

If you are on our assisted pull-out scheme, your details will be allocated to the new collection round automatically. You will still receive information about the changes confirming your collection day and collection weeks for the blue bin. All you'll have to do is give us access to your bin.

Communal flats and other properties

If you live in a flat, you will be notified about before the change

Benefits

By covering less mileage, we'll be cutting fuel consumption and reducing our carbon emissions. Collecting over 4 days (rather than 5), will also save the council around £80,000 a year, meaning your council tax can be freed up to spend on other services.

Bank Holidays

One of the benefits of the 4 day working week (Tuesday - Friday) is that most collections will be unaffected by Bank Holidays. Your collection day will stay the same following Bank Holiday Mondays throughout the year.

The only time your collection day may change will be over the Christmas and New Year holidays, depending on the days that the bank holidays fall on. If you have a Friday collection, Good Friday your collection fall back to the Saturday. For any other public holidays, depending on which day they fall on, we will advise you if are affected.

How you can help

These changes involved around 69,000 properties and unfortunately some people will experience a slightly longer delay between their old and new collection days during the changeover period. Some people may receive two collections within a week.

If you have to wait slightly longer for a collection, you should still have enough space for your rubbish. If your recycling collections are delayed, find your nearest recycling site on My South Tyneside or the Recycling Village and shop for any excess recycling or waste you may have.

Please make sure that you recycle all that you can with your blue recycling bin.
