Christmas Market Returns To South Shields

Press release

The popular arts and crafts market makes a return to South Shields Market Place this Christmas to offer a great range of gifts for the festive season.

Once again, South Tyneside Council has teamed up with events coordinator Anne Hodgson from Hawthorn Arts to hold a Christmas market under a giant marquee in the Market Square next Thursday (8th December), from 10am until 4pm.

There will be a diverse range of festive gifts available to buy from sellers from all over the North East. Products include jewellery and bags, handmade wood products, hand painted clothing, photography and prints, food and drink gifts and lots more.

Councillor Tracey Dixon, Lead Member for Leisure and Community Safety, said: "We hope that people will take this opportunity to visit the Christmas Market as they go about their Christmas shopping in South Shields Town Centre.

"There will be a whole host of unique gifts to buy from talented artists and craftspeople and sellers from around the region. With the addition of stalls selling foods such as traditional fish and chips and delicious Indian cuisine, it really is well worth a visit."

There will also be live music from Gavin Lee's New Orleans Band from 11am until 1pm, while wandering street entertainers SnoBo & Scrooge spreading Christmas cheer among shoppers until 3pm.

Anne Hodgson, Creative Development Manager of Hawthorn Arts, said: "It's great to be collaborating with South Tyneside Council on this. The Economic Growth Team is really beginning to think outside the box to bring our Borough to life.

"This is a very challenging time for all business but also exciting in terms of new possibilities. South Tyneside is heaving with creative talent and I'm pleased to be able to offer a platform for its development. I have plans for some great future events, so watch this space!"

Anyone interested in the Christmas Market or future events can contact Anne on 07914 431 290 or email info@hawthornarts.com for more information.

Later that day, adults can get creative with a Christmas willow crafts session running from 7pm to 9pm, at Jarrow Community Association in Cambrian Street, Jarrow. Booking is essential for the free event. For further details call Countryside Officer, Clare Rawcliffe on (0191) 424 7423 or email countryside@southtyneside.gov.uk
