Parking Bays Are Just The Tonic!
Councillors in West Harton are hoping they have found the cure to parking problems near a doctor's surgery.
Patients using the Farnham Medical Centre on Farnham Road contacted the Biddick and All Saints ward councillors to see if they could address the lack of nearby parking.
The councillors - Olive Punchion, Anne Walsh and Tom Pigott - responded by securing £15,000 from the West Shields, Cleadon and East Boldon Community Area Forum.
And the grant is being spent on a scheme to provide 11 new parking bays - including two disabled spaces - on Farnham Road.
Councillor Olive Punchion, who chairs the Forum, said: "Though parking problems are a common complaint that ward councillors have to deal with, they are not always easy to resolve.
"In this case, we identified a stretch of road near the centre that we felt would provide the ideal location for some new parking bays. We were delighted to secure funding from the Forum so that we could take a scheme forward and construction work is now under way.
"Many of the people who use the centre are elderly or have mobility problems or other disabilities, so it will be a great help to them that these new parking bays are just a short walk away. It will make their lives a lot easier."
Councillor Punchion added: "This is a great example of how ward councillors can address issues that are important to local people and we are always keen to hear about any concerns in our ward."
