All children and young people should grow up in a home where they are loved and feel secure.
At times there are upsets in all families, but sometimes things go badly wrong for a little while or a long time.
What is abuse?
There are 4 types of abuse:
- physical - when someone
- hurts a child by hitting them or in some other way, or
- threatens to hurt them.
- emotional - when someone
- tells a child they are unloved, unwanted or useless or
- tells them they are only valued or loved because they do things for someone else
- makes or tries to get them to do things that aren't right for a child of that age
- makes children feel frightened or in danger.
- sexual - when someone
- makes or tries to get a child to view pornography or other people engaged in sexual activity;
- develops a relationship with a child so they can have sex with them some time later ('grooming');
- has sex with a child or young person, even if the child or young person agrees.
- neglect - when a child or young person is denied the care they need.
