Littlehaven sea wall realignment
In 2001 and 2007 an independent consultants report identified that there was significant disrepair to the Littlehaven sea wall and that it was reaching the end of its serviceable life. The report concluded that major repair works would be required in the immediate future or that the defence would require a complete upgrading.
The current alignment of the sea wall has led to regular overtopping and flooding of the land behind. This has led to a continued weakening of the structure, which in conjunction with the overtopping, can be considered as a health and safety risk to the general public. The report also suggested that there is a need to move towards a more sustainable defence line, therefore upgrading the existing defence with a new sea wall that will be able to adapt to future sea level rise and the projected climatic changes.
South Tyneside Council are proposing that a new, more landward and realigned Sea Wall is constructed at Littlehaven, which will provide an improved and sustainable coastal defence that will take account future climatic changes and sea level rise, whilst regenerating the area to create amenity land through a wider promenade, increased beach space and an open 'stepped wall' access.
The project is currently in the design phase and funding is currently being sourced in order for the construction to commence.
