The Torch is just weeks away from arriving in South Shields but youngsters have been embracing the Olympic spirit with a special athletics event.

The Legacy Games - North East Junior Athletics Championships took place at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow where the competitors were greeted by the Torino Torch from the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Jordan Kelly,14, from Boldon School and Robbie Smith, 13, from Bamburgh School both competed on the day.

Jordan finished second in the Power Slalom, the Distance Club and first in the Precision Club.

Robbie competed in the shot put where he came first and both boys are now waiting to hearing whether they have met the qualifying distance to compete in the National Finals which are held in Warwick on July 14 and 15.

The event was organised by Sports Development Teams from South Tyneside, Gateshead and Newcastle Councils alongside Cedars School in Gateshead.
