Children's centres

There are 12 children's centres in South Tyneside. All offer care from 6 weeks to 5 years on a full or part time basis, and integrated care for 3 and 4 year olds attending early education.

Centre services may include

Health services

  • Ante-natal and post-natal advice and support for mothers, fathers and carers
  • Information and advice on breastfeeding, hygiene, safety, weaning and nutrition
  • Health visitor support
  • Help to stop smoking
  • Speech and language and other specialist support

Family support and outreach

  • Family support and home visits
  • Free training courses, including creche
  • Childminder support services including networks
  • Links to Jobcentre Plus and the  Families Information Service
  • Access to specialist services
  • Information and advice to mothers, fathers and carers on a range of subjects
  • Access to a range of activities to enjoy with your child(ren)

Childcare integrated with early education

  • Good quality early learning combined with full daycare for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years, from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday for a minimum of 48 weeks per year
  • Links to other daycare provision, out of school clubs and extended school services
  • Early identification of children with special needs and disabilities providing access and support for them and their families
