About the market
South Shields Market is the focal point for the town centre and attracts thousands of visitors and bargain hunters from near and far.
The long-established Market offers all the best to be found in an open-air traditional marketplace. It is one of the oldest and most popular markets in the Northeast. The market is held in a traditional square with the Eighteenth century old town hall at its heart. The historic church of St Hilda stands on the South side of the marketplace and there has been a church on the site since 647 A.D.
One of the finest open air markets in the North East, it has been recently modernised to include a new paved area and a tree lined border.
Each week, the marketplace is alive with the buzz of bargain hunters and the banter of stallholders. Markets are held every Saturday and Monday and sell everything from plants, flowers, fruit and food to good quality clothing, toys, handbags and art works.
The Friday flea market has its own special appeal to people who like to rummage as it has curios, books and bric-a-brac, all at low prices as well as second hand bargains.
The marketplace is dominated by the elegant 'pepper pot' old Town Hall, which stands at its centre, offering shelter and a handy resting place.
