Business Park Proposal

View the consultation draft version of the TyneWear Regional Employment Site Area Action Plan development plan document on our Local Development Framework public consultation page.

In 2002 the Government's Regional Planning Guidance backed the idea of a large new Strategic employment site to be located to the north of Sunderland and to the south of South Tyneside. Since this announcement independent consultants have been working closely with Sunderland, South Tyneside and Gateshead local authorities to identify and agree a precise location for this prestigious new development.

A preferred site, initially referred to as Tyne Wear Park, has been identified to the south of Fellgate, bounded on the west by the A194, on the south by the A184, and on the east by A19. This proposal is a major opportunity for economic development and jobs in South Tyneside. Modern businesses require modern buildings, and increasingly they want these to be built to the highest architectural standards, located in high quality environments. South Tyneside Council is now embarking on the process of planning the site to create a new, high quality business park which will be a flagship employment site for the Borough and the North East.

The images on these pages do not show what will be built on the Tyne Wear Park site, as there are many stages to the consultation and planning process that need to be completed before any developments can be agreed. But what they do show is the sort of developments that could take place: exciting buildings, excellent landscaping, and high quality public spaces for the use of everybody.

South Tyneside Council and its partners are committed to achieving the highest levels of urban design across the Borough. This commitment will ensure that Tyne Wear Park development will be one of the most prestigious sites in the North of England, providing many jobs for the people of Tyneside and Wearside.
