South Tyneside Shouts Its Best For Business Message
South Tyneside has launched a major drive to attract new business and investment into the Borough on the back of its enterprising status. A high profile radio and press campaign is highlighting the fact that South Tyneside holds the title of North East Regional Capital of Enterprise and truly is the place to do business. The Borough was awarded the title by One NorthEast under HM Treasury’s Enterprising Britain competition to find the town, city or place in the country that is best improving economic prospects and encouraging enterprise. The new promotional campaign is being financed by One NorthEast following South Tyneside’s win and is being spent highlighting the best the Borough has to offer businesses. The promotional push uses the positive sunflower imagery adopted for the Borough’s bid to win enterprise status and brands South Tyneside “The City Edge at the Cutting Edge.”
STEP, made up of partners including the private sector, South Tyneside Council and TEDCO, see the move as part of a long-term aim to boost the enterprise culture at every level of the community. Doug Scott, Chief Executive of TEDCO and Vice-chairman of STEP, said: “Holding the title of North East Regional Capital of Enterprise has given the Borough a real confidence boost and is a testament to the brilliant businesses and enterprising people in South Tyneside who we are proud to serve. “Collectively we have an excellent environment in which businesses at all levels are encouraged to thrive and we have a quality, hard working, labour market. We are proud to tell businesses – come to South Tyneside.” Inward investment has been helped by the launch of the Council’s South Tyneside Major Business Grant Fund which has successfully helped to attract some major companies to the Borough like electronic sign manufacturer Variable Messaging Signs Ltd and plant and machinery specialists HM Plant, who relocated from Somerset. Four years ago the speculatively built factory units on the Enterprise Zone in Jarrow had stood empty for years. Now they are all full! The reclaimed former coke works site at Monkton remained undeveloped, apart from three large empty factory units and now the whole site is developed or has plans for development. Boldon Business Park continues to be successful with recent opening of TEDCO’s third business centre The Quadrus Centre which offers state-of-the-art office accommodation for high growth service sector companies. Also new company New Logic Marketing created its multi-million pound marketing and outsourcing operation at Boldon with plans well on track to create 170 financial services jobs. Fellow tenant automotive supplier Hashimoto has reaffirmed its commitment to the Borough with the company taking on new units and more staff. Running parallel with action to aid inward investment, development agency TEDCO continues to nurture entrepreneurial talent at all levels to help new businesses get off the ground. It also runs its groundbreaking Enterprise in Education programme to help get the business message to school pupils from an early age.
