Transforming South Tyneside
 Transforming Together

A Cleaner, Greener, Safer South Tyneside

One of the key tasks for transforming South Tyneside is to make our Borough a more energy-efficient and less wasteful place. We have made massive progress over the past three years and there are big plans to build on our achievements.

Groundwork South Tyneside is working in partnership with South Tyneside Council and Premier Waste to take forward the environmental agenda in South Tyneside. All our efforts are paying off - already there has been a huge 210% increase in recycling across the Borough since 2002, through our innovative Kerb-it and Kerb-It Green schemes.

South Tyneside saw off competition from 26 other authorities in the 2004 annual Composting Awards to win the category of Best Local Authority Initiative. The award was for our Kerb-It Green collection service and the new centralised composting facility at Tyne Dock.

Plans are also under way to redevelop an existing site to provide a new civic amenities service. The focus of the service will be on recycling, waste re-use and recovery – not just somewhere to ‘dump’ waste. This is planned to open in April 2006.

South Tyneside Council is piloting the use of innovative energy sources and at the newly-refurbished respite homes in Bisley Drive, South Shields, solar panels have been installed to provide hot water. A photovoltaic panel also generates electricity from the sun to supplement general electricity use in the building.

Solar-powered burglar alarms have been installed in the Borough’s Rekendyke and and Bents areas. The service costs just over £2 and one resident who has twice been a victim of burglary wrote that the initiative has greatly helped her recover from the trauma and restored her faith in human nature.

By working together South Tyneside really is a cleaner, greener, safer place to live!
