Changing Face Of South Tyneside

South Tyneside’s Local Strategic Partnership is re-shaping the face of the Borough with new developments representing millions of pounds of investment.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in South Shields and Jarrow, where new shops and improvements to the area are accelerating the pace of change.

Fashion giant Next is to open on the site of the former fire station in Keppel Street, South Shields, and discussions are ongoing with two other quality high-street names interested in moving to the £3m retail development.

Also in South Shields, Asda is spending £5m on a new supermarket in Coronation Street, and the town’s Market Square will be improved and upgraded to allow a range of specialist markets and events.

In Jarrow, Wimpey Homes is developing more than 150 homes at the vacant Ormonde Street site in the town centre while design work will start later this year on environmental improvements between Jarrow Town Hall and the Viking Centre.

In Hebburn Town Centre, inquiries are being made with supermarket operators to determine what level of interest there is in a new foodstore. And a planning application is expected shortly for a new health facility in Glen Street.
