Heritage Trail – And Beyond

The concept of a Heritage Trail originated from the people of South Tyneside, during the extensive consultation carried out in the community around developing the Council’s Cultural Strategy Catch The Spirit. The development of the Heritage Trail targets the role of culture in the ongoing transformation and regenerat ion of the Borough.

However, the aims of the Heritage Trail go beyond just celebrating and sharing the culture and history of South Tyneside. Culture can play a big part in improving learning, promoting the health and well-being of our residents, improving the local economy and increasing employment prospects. It has an important role to play in the Transformation, the Local Strategic Partnership’s plans for the transformation and regeneration of South Tyneside.

Employment and Enterprise is also a Transformation priority and the Heritage Trail has built on the progress made in this area by establishing an Intermediate Labour Market scheme which helps unemployed people back into work by offering work and training for up to 12 months.

Nine long-term unemployed residents have found work in Stewarding and Guiding Services for the Heritage Trail. Neighbourhood Renewal Funding allocated by the Partnership has extended the project to a 24-month period and will create up to 20 posts in total.

We have also used the obvious health benefits of walking the Heritage Trail by building on the successful Walking Works Wonders Partnership. This award-winning partnership involves a number of organisations, including Age Concern, South Tyneside Health Action Zone and Groundwork South Tyneside. A series of guided walks have already taken place, many linking in with the GP Referral Scheme.
