Information we need from you
To process your claim for housing benefit we will need to see:
- Proof of identity for both you and your partner
- Proof of national insurance number for you and your partner
- Proof of all income for you and your partner
- Proof of capital for both you and your partner
- Proof of rent if you rent from a landlord or housing association
The benefit claim form provides examples of the type of documents which will be accepted.
We always need to see original documents. Copies will not be accepted.
Proofs can be brought to any of the offices listed on the contacts page or can be posted to:

South Shields
Tyne and Wear
Any documents posted to the council will be returned by second-class post.
The Benefits Service will not accept responsibility for the loss of any documents sent by post.
We recommend that you bring any valuable documents to one of our benefits offices.
