Sometimes carers will have to manage the legal and financial affairs. Below are brief descriptions of some of the terms that you may come across.
- Appointeeship
- this is where you take charge of paying bills, collecting pensions or benefits where the claimant is incapable themselves but is able to give their consent. The Department of Work and Pensions office can provide you with details.
- Power of Attorney
- this is where one person gives another the legal right to manage their affairs. This power is only valid while the person is mentally capable. Seek advice from a solicitor.
- Enduring Power of Attorney
- this allows people who are mentally capable to decide who they would like to manage their affairs should they become unable to do so themselves
- Court of Protection
- this body may take over and manage the affairs of someone who is mentally incapable. The Public Guardianship Office has further details.
- Security of Tenure
- if you share accommodation with the person for whom you care, make sure that your right to remain in the property following a change of circumstance is assured.
