Bereavement - When the person you care for dies
What to do first
If the death was expected, contact the doctor who attended the deceased during their final illness.
If the death is sudden or unexpected, contact the following:
- The family doctor
- The nearest relative of the deceased
- The police, who will help find the people listed above if necessary.
If the doctor can certify the cause of death, she/he will give you the following:
- Medical Certificate showing the cause of death, addressed to the registrar
- Formal Notice which states the doctor has signed the medical certificate.
Registering the Death
The death must be registered within five days with the Registrar of Births and Deaths. Registrar's Office for South Tyneside can be found at:
