Adoption

Adoption support

If you have been involved in adoption either as an adopted person, an adopter or a birth relative of someone who has been adopted, you may at some point in your life require adoption support.

South Tyneside Adoption Service is obligated to assess the needs for such support and may, if they are able, provide it.

Who is eligible for support?

If we arrange an adoption, we are responsible for doing an assessment for support for as long as those concerned live here.

If somone moves away, we continue to be responsible for 3 years after the Order is granted, and after that the Local Authority wherever the person lives becomes responsible for doing the assessment.

Who do I contact?

Every local authority has a person nominated as an Adoption Support Service Advisor (ASSA). This person is responsible for ensuring that your request for support is dealt with and may become involved in negotiating the provision of support for you.
