After months of build up, a record number of nominations and a tough judging process, South Tyneside’s stars were finally honoured at the fifth annual Pride of South Tyneside Awards, which took place at The Customs House on 19 July 2007.
The star-studded event is organised by the South Tyneside Council, The Customs House and The Shields Gazette and celebrates the borough’s unsung heroes and their role in making South Tyneside such a special place.
There were 11 categories this year, which included two new categories – greener South Tyneside and carer of the year. The awards were brought to an emotional high when all the finalists for the child of courage and carer of the year took to the stage to receive an award.
In total, 11 people and two groups walked away with a pride award, with J Barbour and Sons scooping the judges’ special award for their dedication to South Tyneside and worldwide success as an international brand.
Our finalists were not the only stars of the show – the awards also saw celebrity presenters gracing the stage to announce category winners. Alan Shearer, Denise Robertson, Steve Cram, Ken Dodd and David Bellamy also sent recorded messages of congratulation to all the finalists, which added to the excitement.

The night also showcased South Tyneside’s performing talent with entertainment being provided by the three young performer(s) of the year finalists as well as street dancers and Irish dancers.
Once again, our thanks extend to everyone involved in this year’s awards, especially our sponsors who made the whole event possible.
