Register Office: Births

Registering a Birth

Births Where do I register a birth?

All babies born in South Tyneside, whether at home or in hospital, must be registered in person at the Register Office within 6 weeks of the birth. You do not need to bring anything with you, but will be asked to provide certain information about the mother, father and baby.

You can do this at the Register Office in the district where the birth occurred. Alternatively, you can go to any Register Office in England and Wales and make a declaration of the particulars required for registration purposes. Once the registration has taken place you will receive a short certificate of birth and an application form to enable you to register with a Doctor. This service is free of charge. Further birth certificates can be purchased. The Registrar will advise you of the current fees.
