Legal Duties
We are responsible for providing a public service to carry out legal duties and to register all births, deaths and still births within the Borough of South Tyneside.
We are responsible for taking notice of marriages which will take place between people living in the Borough of South Tyneside. The marriage could take place in the South Shields Register Office, any other register office in England or Wales, churches within the district, approved premises or any other country or place allowed by law. (Some C of E churches conduct marriages for divorced couples. Please contact Superintendent Registrar for further information).
We are responsible for performing and registering all civil (non-religious) marriages taking place in the Borough of South Tyneside. We are also responsible for registering marriages in churches other than the Church of England.
As well as this we also play a part in registering places of worship
We hold records of births, deaths and marriages, which took place in the Borough of South Tyneside, from 1837. We can give you certified copies of these records if you pay the legal fee. A certified copy is not a photocopy and can be used for legal purposes.
We also provide advice and help on re-registering births and correcting birth, deaths and marriage entries. These may have to be processed through the General Register Office.
