Total Place ‘Better for less’
Total Place is a new initiative that looks at how a ‘whole area’ approach to public services can lead to better services at less cost.
It seeks to identify and avoid overlap and duplication between organisations – delivering a step change in both service improvement and efficiency at the local level, as well as across government.
The impact of the economic downturn means all of the public sector needs to find radical new solutions to not only deliver better value for money, but also better local services more tailored to local needs.
Total Place is the next big step to redesign how we do things and by doing so, improve the quality of life for our communities.
Areas involved
South Tyneside, Gateshead and Sunderland were one of thirteen areas that volunteered to act as a pilot for Total Place.
The South of Tyne and Wear pilot involved the following partners:
- Gateshead Council
- South Tyneside Council
- Sunderland City Council
- NHS South of Tyne and Wear
- Northumbria Police
- Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service
- Trade Unions
- Voluntary and Community Sector
- Balance (North East of England’s Alcohol Office)
The three Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) worked together to choose the focus of 'safer, stronger and healthier neighbourhoods' and within that decided to focus the pilot on a social outcome of importance to all of our communities - 'reducing harm from alcohol and drug misuse'.
Reports
All thirteen Total Place pilots submitted their final reports on 19 February 2010.
The information in the submissions is being collated around what the pilots are seeking to do differently, the potential benefits of the work, what the barriers to it are, and what the evidence used to back this up is.
A joint report between local and central government will then be collated with key findings influencing the 2010 Budget.
