We have two kerbside collection services for the recycling of domestic waste.
Kerb-it is our latest recycling service for the kerbside collection of papers, cans and glass bottles and jars from 65,000 individual properties in the borough.
Kerb-It Green collects garden waste from over 17,000 properties and this is composted at our new centralised composting facility at Tyne Dock

- When does my Kerb-It recycling box get emptied?
- Your box will get emptied every fortnight after 8.00am, normally on the same day as your wheelie bin. Premier Waste will supply details of your future collections. The information will be contained within their leaflet about the service.

- Why is my my Kerb-It recycling box only collected once a fortnight?
- Fortnightly collections are more cost effective and the capacity of the box is designed to accommodate approximately two weeks worth of the recyclables that we will collect.
Top
- Will Kerb-It affect my normal collection of rubbish?
- No. You will still have your normal rubbish collected every week on your current collection day.
Top
- Where do I put my Kerb-It box for collection?
- Your box should be placed on the highway at the edge of your property. This is likely to be where you currently put your wheelie bin.
Top
- What goes in the Kerb-It box?
- Paper
newspapers, magazines, junk mail, white telephone directories, all other white and coloured paper. - Glass
glass bottles and jars (tops should be removed before recycling and rinsed if possible). - Cans
steel and aluminium food and drinks cans (rinsed and flattened if possible).
Only items listed above will be recycled. Unlisted items will be left in the box for residents to dispose of in their wheeled bin.

- Why is plastic not collected in the Kerb-It recycling scheme?
- At present, it is too expensive to collect plastic under this service and the compartments on the vehicles used are fully utilised for the paper, glass and cans we collect and recycle. We are undertaking a trial scheme through Middlefields recycling centre, Heddon Way, South Shields to recycle plastic bottles.

- How big is the Kerb-It recycling box?
- The box has a capacity of 53 litres and weighs 1.6kg. It's not much larger than a supermarket shopping basket.
Top
- What if I need help with my Kerb-It recycling box?
- If you are already on the "assisted pull out" scheme for your wheelie bin, you will be automatically placed on our list of residents who will receive similar assistance with your box. If you need any further information, you should contact Premier Waste on 427 8050.

- Why does my Kerb-It box not have a lid?
The box does not come with a lid. We chose not to supply lids with the box for the following reasons:
- They limit the amount of recyclable materials that can fit in the box.
- They reduce the efficiency of our collectors when checking for contamination of the materials.
- They add undue expense to the cost of the scheme.
Top
- Will my Kerb-It Box be emptied at the same time as my grey bin or Kerb-It Green bin?
- It is unlikely that all your containers will be emptied at the same time. We have concentrated on ensuring that all your bins or boxes are collected on the same day so that you don't have to worry about remembering which day what container gets put out.
The time it takes to collect all the bins or boxes presented on any given street varies and it would not be practical or efficient for the crews to coordinate their arrivals. We aim to have your containers emptied between 8.00am and 5.00pm.
