Buying a grave
We appreciate that during this difficult time you will have to make important decisions about the cemetery and grave you want for the funeral.
The following information will help you make your choice.
Exclusive rights of burial
When a grave is opened for burial, the family has 8 years from the date of burial in which to purchase the exclusive rights of burial to the grave space.
Purchasing the exclusive rights ensures that the grave is kept for the sole use of the family for 50 years and allows for the application of memorials to be erected on the grave. The purchase of the exclusive rights to burial does not grant ownership of the land in question.
Grave spaces can be purchased in advance of being required for burial and it is also possible to select any available grave space in a chosen section of a cemetery on payment of a selection fee.
How do I buy the exclusive rights of burial?
Normally, your funeral director
will help to make the necessary arrangements for buying a grave.
Some people may want to make their
own arrangements at the time of the funeral. You can organise this
by directly contacting us. We will be happy to advise you. If you
would like to view the section of the cemetery where the burial
is to take place before the funeral, we will arrange for a member
of staff to meet with you on the site.
How long can I buy a grave for?
In the cemeteries we manage, we offer several types of grave. The exclusive right of burial is sold for 50 years. These are known as ‘purchased graves'.
What if I don't buy the exclusive rights of burial?
If the rights to burial are not purchased by a member of the previous bereaved family after 8 years, the grave may be used by the council for the burial of another person from a different family.
It should be noted because of the length of time period that the right to purchase a grave space remains open, it is not possible to send reminder letters to any family who may be involved.
Who can buy a grave?
Anyone in South Tyneside can buy a grave space in the borough's cemeteries, however charges for non residents will be subject to a surcharge.
