The Countryside Team forms part of the Planning and Housing Futures Group within Neighbourhood Services. The team consists of a Senior Countryside Officer, a Countryside Officer and a Public Rights of Way Officer.
Our main aims
- Protect and enhance the borough's countryside and wildlife habitats
- Increase accessibility by extending and improving the path network
- Promote awareness of, and involvement in, the countryside by generating publicity, running public events.
To achieve these aims the team works in partnership with many organisations, including the Great North Forest, Natural England, Groundwork South Tyneside, Durham Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.
Environmental education
Education plays a crucial role in helping young people to appreciate, use and protect the natural environment. The team works closely with local schools and the Environmental Education Centre at West Boldon.
