About the awards

We recognise that good design can help to make South Tyneside a more attractive and successful place, where people will choose to live, work and enjoy their leisure time.

Councillor Alan Kerr the borough's design and historic environment champion and chairman of the council’s planning committee said:

"The Good Design Awards send a strong message that the council is committed to encouraging quality development in South Tyneside. Good design creates pride among residents and visitors, and attracts business investment to the borough. The challenge of climate change raises the importance of creating well-designed buildings and places that will help the local community lead a more sustainable lifestyle. I am delighted that the Good Design Awards are to be held again in order to recognise quality and innovation in our buildings and places".

The aim of South Tyneside’s Good Design Awards is to recognise and encourage design excellence in a wide range of developments throughout the borough.

The council has demonstrated its commitment to design quality by awarding 8 Good Design Awards in 2003, 9 in 2004 and 13 Good Design Awards and commendations in 2006.
