The Street Lighting team, working in partnership with Balfour Beatty Power Networks, are also responsible for the delivery of the annual festive lighting programme.
The Festive Lighting Programme currently involves over 400 separate lighting features being erected across the borough, including testing, maintenance and repair of the equipment to ensure that every item adheres to Health and Safety regulations.
Over 30 felled Christmas trees are also delivered from Scotts in Northumberland and these are erected around the borough and dressed with festoon and LED lighting along with the dressing of 40 existing mature trees with LED lighting.
In total the festive lighting 2007 programme required 600 additional working days in man hours.
Sponsoring the festive lighting programme
The council are committed to continuously improving the festive lighting programme throughout future years in order to make it more sustainable and reduce the impact on the environment. As an example of this sustainability, we are exchanging felled Christmas trees for decorated existing highway trees in many locations.
We are currently seeking sponsorship from local businesses to help with the cost of the 2008 Festive Lighting Programme throughout the borough.
Sponsors of the impressive 2007 programme included:
- The Port of Tyne Authority
- Glendale Countryside
- Phoenix Beard
- Balfour Beatty Power Networks
If you are a local business and would be interested in sponsoring the displays planned for this winter please contact the Street Lighting team via the Contact Centre on 0191 427 7000.
