Apply for listed building consent

Drawing of South Shields Town Hall

A listed building consent is an important document and it is important that your application, including plans, is complete and accurate. We will not be able to deal with your application until all the required information has been submitted. Please ensure that you follow the guidance in these notes and provide all the necessary information.

Advice from English Heritage

English Heritage provide good advice detailing the application process including information on the following:

  • How do I apply for listed building consent?
  • How long will it take?
  • What happens if I make alterations without consent?
  • What is the VAT position?

Your first step should be to contact your local council before you make the application. You may be invited to use the pre application enquiry service offered by the council, to discuss your proposal and offer advice. This could save you time and money. It is often best to employ an architect who is used to working with listed buildings.
Local authorities deal with all listed building consent cases and will give you the appropriate form for making your application. The majority of cases are dealt with by the local authority, but the most important cases are referred to English Heritage (Notifications) and sometimes to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions (Referrals).
Your application will need to include enough information to show clearly what you intend to do, with detailed drawings and photographs.
