Parking: New residents' parking policy

Why are we proposing to revise our parking permit policy?

South Tyneside Council now has responsibility for developing and enforcing parking policy within the borough.

This is an advantage for local communities because we are able to respond to the priorities of the people of South Tyneside and our partners who work well together to make the borough a better place to live, work and visit.

There will be stronger links between transport policy, transport programme delivery and successful operation of transport services.

The new powers will help us improve:

  • Road safety
  • Traffic flow
  • Our environment
  • Access throughout South Tyneside

We have listened to residents and plan to introduce a new policy to address parking concerns in specific neighbourhoods.

The existing parking policy is out of date and there has been significant resident concern about parking issues:

  • We have requests for parking schemes in 94 new areas.
  • Our research shows that in some areas, more than 40% of vehicles parked are none residents who park there for five hours in a normal working day.

The proposed policy, as well as our wider parking strategy, aims to improve road safety, reduce congestion and CO2 emissions.  It will also support us in addressing neighbourhood concerns and deliver cleaner, safer and greener neighbourhoods.
