Planning Permission and Applications

Enquiries about Planning Permission

These pages concentrate on guidance for householders. However, the general principles apply in many other situations. You can download the booklet 'Planning-A Guide for Householders', which provides further information for householders, or you can pick up a copy from the Planning Office.

Most significant building work and changes in the use of land or buildings involves development requiring planning permission from the Council.  Some minor works do not need permission.  If you wish to know whether planning permission is required the Council offers a free enquiry service for householder developments, adverts, listed buildings and some very minor commercial developments.  To help us advise you as to whether you need planning permission, download a householder enquiry form or pick up a form from the Planning Office.

For most commercial developments, including residential schemes, changes of use, and schemes that result in an increase in new floor space, the Council has decided that a charge should be made for pre-application advice in order that we can provide the service to a consistent and high standard.  A leaflet A Guide to Pre-application Advice Service and a booklet Planning Permission-A Guide for Business can be obtained from the Planning Office or by clicking on the above links.

These pages provide a simple guide only to householder developments, adverts, listed buildings as well as for some of the very minor commercial developments where the Council offers a free planning enquiry service.
