Purpose and Background

This Planning Glossary is a summary guide of over 450 words and phrases relating to land use and planning matters and which may be used within our Local Development Framework. Its contents cover a large variety of issues ranging from new development and regeneration, to conservation and environmental protection.
The glossary is presented in an alphabetical format, making it easy to use. Wherever possible terms have been written in plain English (although some listings are of a more technical nature).

Status of Glossary In many cases terms and phrases are taken and abbreviated from national planning policy relating to England. However, the Glossary is neither a statement of law nor an interpretation of the law, and its status is only an introductory guide to planning issues.

Further information

Users should note that the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) is currently updating national planning guidance on a range of issues, and the ODPM web site can be viewed for listings of National Planning Policy Guidance, Statements and Circulars, see www.odpm.gov.uk for more information.
