Glossary | A- CA - C | D - G | H - L | M - Q | R - S | T - Z Goods requiring facilities not readily available in existing shopping centres due to the need for large storage and display and the generation of greater volumes of traffic. Bulky goods include DIY, furniture and car pets but exclude electrical goods, toys and clothing. Shale used in the manufacture of building bricks and which contains a proportion of carbon. A concept launched by the Secretary of State for the Environment in May 1991. Selected local authorities are invited to put forward bids in an annual competition for additional resources for urban regeneration programmes. This initiative has subsequently been superseded by the Single Regeneration Budget (SRB). A national initiative being implemented locally as the 'Great North Forest'. The local forest is a partnership formed by South Tyneside and Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Councils and Sunderland City Council, Chester-le-Street District Council, Durham County Council and the Countryside and Forestry Commissions. The partnership aims to introduce multi-purpose forests to produce timber, support conservation and provide extra recreation and leisure opportunities. The forest in South Tyneside covers the southern, rural parts of the Borough (refer to Map 6.1). An area of special architectural or historic interest, the character and appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. Within these areas there are additional controls over development, and the felling and pruning of trees. Conservation Areas are designated by the Local Planning Authority under the provisions of the Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas Act 1990. Area attached to a property as part of its enclosure. The curtilage of a house, therefore, includes front and back gardens and side passages.
