UDP LogoUnitary Development Plan

This Unitary Development Plan (or UDP for short) was adopted on 20 October 1999, and guides the development of South Tyneside into the new Millennium. It is the first Plan to cover the whole of the area since it became a Metropolitan Borough in 1974.

The Plan seeks to ensure that, as changes occur, the local environment will be protected and improved, for the benefit of residents and businesses in South Tyneside.

The main policies and proposals contained in this Plan will remain guiding principles pending their formal review and replacement. The Council has resolved to replace the UDP in accordance with the Governments new planning system the Local Development Framework (LDF). The South Tyneside LDF is a new type of borough-wide spatial development plan which will gradually replace the existing Unitary Development Plan (UDP). The LDF will guide the future development of the Borough over the next 10-15 years. It is a blueprint for the economic, social and environmental regeneration of South Tyneside. It takes forward the vision of the Council's Transformational Plan and Regeneration Strategy. It will provide the framework for implementing the aims and objectives of the Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement that have spatial and land use implications. The LDF strategy will also be influenced by national planning policy and the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for the North East.

The LDF will be prepared over the next 3-4 years. During its preparation these web pages will be kept up to date with how things are progressing. Further details about the new LDF can be found on our website’s planning pages and within our Local Development Scheme (LDS).
