Trade Draw Rate

This is the percentage of trade which a shopping centre attracts from a defined area. (For example, the Trade Draw Rate from Jarrow and Hebburn to Jarrow Town Centre is 39% for convenience goods and 31% for durable goods).

Traffic Calming

Measures to control traffic flow and improve road safety and the quality of the environment

Transport Corridor

Land and buildings immediately adjacent to, or prominent from, railway and Metro lines, major roads and the River Tyne.

Urban Development Area

An area designated by the Secretary of State for the Environment to be regenerated by an Urban Development Corporation. In South Tyneside the riverside strip is in the Urban Development Area (UDA) and the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation has the responsibility for its generation. The Urban Development Corporation acts as the Local Planning Authority for development control purposes in this area. (Refer to Introduction).

Urban Programme

The aim of the Programme is to tackle the underlying economic, environmental and social problems in the inner urban areas. The programme is financed 75% by central and 25% by local government.

Wildlife Corridor

A continuous strip of open land, woodland or water, which facilitates the movement of wildlife species. The corridors were defined in the Tyne and Wear Nature Conservation Strategy (1988).

Windfall Site

A site which becomes available for development during the plan period which was not available (or the status of which was uncertain) when the Plan was being prepared.
