The Untidy Sites Working Group
Aims
The Untidy Sites Working Group's Aims are drawn up in conjunction with the South Tyneside Community Strategy (2002) 'Moving Towards a Better Future' and the Local Strategic Partnership.
The community aims are:
- Helping to keep crime and anti-social behaviour low
- Helping to develop community spirit
- Creating confidence in the community
- Creating wealth in the local economy
- Keeping South Tyneside clean, safe and tidy.
Dilapidated and vandalised buildings or unkempt and rubbish strewn land have a significant effect on peoples' perception of an area and on the quality of life of its residents. By addressing these problems the Council also contributes to the achievement of Community Aims.
A site that appears neglected or un-owned often encourages anti-social behaviour, the results of which may affect adjacent properties and in turn discourage their maintenance. Such sites can also give the impression of an area in decline, which not only reduces the pride and confidence that residents have in their community, but can also affect the economic viability of an area. In addition, untidy sites can also be unsafe and unhygienic by their very nature.
