What is South Tyneside’s Race Equality Scheme?
The Race Equality Scheme is a strategy setting out the Council’s approach to promoting race equality. The Scheme sets out how we intend to meet our legislative obligations under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000.
The Act places a general duty on all public authorities to promote race equality. There are also a number of specific duties to help public authorities meet the general duty. This includes producing a Race Equality Scheme.
The Scheme sets out a three-year programme of actions that the Council will undertake to ensure it gives due regard to:
- promoting equality of opportunity
- eliminating unlawful discrimination
- promoting good race relations
The aim of the General Duty is to make race equality an integral part of the way all public services are carried out. In practice, this means the Council must take account of race equality in all day-to-day work of policy-making, service delivery and employment practice.
This is our second Race Equality Scsheme and covers the period 2006 –2009. During its final year we will carry out a comprehensive review to assess how well we have complied with the General Duty to promote race equality. A progress report will be published annually.
We would like to hear your views
In order to improve our Scheme, we would like to involve a variety of individuals, groups and organisations to help shape its content. This means that the people of South Tyneside will largely determine the way their Council deals with race equality in the future.
We want to know what you think about your local services and help us improve the way we promote race equality. What works well and what doesn’t?
