Carers grants

What if I want to claim care support costs?

If you wish to pay someone a wage as an employee in return for providing care support, you should be aware of the following:

  • Certain welfare benefits they receive may be affected
  • Tax and national insurance liabilities may be incurred
  • Legally, you may be considered to be an employer, and therefore responsible for the person’s health, safety and well-being whilst they are working for you

South Tyneside Council advises successful applicants that they should seek advice and guidance from all relevant agencies (such as H.M. Revenue & Customs, National Insurance Contributions Office, Department for Work and Pensions), regarding their potential liabilities.

Please note that anyone who provides care support on a self-employed basis must have registered their self-employment status with H.M. Revenue and Customs. This is now a legal requirement.
